YOGA :: AN INTRODUCTION
Concepts and practices of Yoga originated in
India several thousand years ago. Its founders were great saints and sages
The great yogis gave rational interpretation to their experiences of Yoga and
brought about a practical and scientifically sound method within everyone's
reach. Yoga today is no longer restricted to hermits, saints and sages and it
has taken its place in our everyday lives and has aroused a world wide awakening
and acceptance in the last few decades. The science of yoga and its techniques
have now been reoriented to suit modern sociological needs and lifestyle.
Experts of various branches of medicine including modern medical science are
realising the role of these techniques in the prevention of disease, mitigation
and cure of disease and promotion of health.
Yoga is one among the six systems of vedic
philosophy. Maharishi Patanjali, rightly called " The Father of Yoga
", compiled and refined various aspects of Yoga systematically in his
" Yoga Sutras " ( aphorisms ). He advocated the eight fold path
|

|
of Yoga, popularly known as "
Ashtanga Yoga " for all round development of human personality. The are:-
Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara,
Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi. These
components advocate certain restraints and observances, physical discipline,
breath regulations, restraining the sense organs, contemplation, meditation and
samadhi. These steps are believed to have a potential for improvement of
physical health by encouraging better circulation of oxygenated blood in the
body, retraining the sense organs and thereby inducing tranquility and serenity
of mind. The practice of Yoga prevents psychosomatic disorders / diseases and
improves an individual's resistance and ability to endure stressful situations. |
Yoga is a discipline to improve or develop one's
inherent powers in a balanced manner. It offers the means to reach complete
self-realisation. The literal meaning of the word Yoga is 'yoke'. Accordingly,
Yoga can be defined as a means for uniting the individual spirit with the
universal spirit of God.
Yoga has many paths like Japa Yoga, Karma Yoga,
Gyana Yoga, Bhakti Yoga and Raj Yoga. All paths of yoga have healing potential
to shelter out the effects of the pains which come in life. However, one
essentially needs proper guidance from an accomplished exponent who has already
treaded the same track to reach the ultimate goal. The particular path is to be
chosen very cautiously in view of his aptitude and potential either with the
help of a competent counselor or consulting an accomplished yogi.

NATUROPATHY :: AN INTRODUCTION
| Nature Cure is an art and science of healthy
living and a drugless system of healing based on well founded philosophy. It has
its own concept of health and disease and also principles of treatment. Nature
cure is a very old science. We can find a number of references in our Vedas and
other ancient texts. Nature Cure or naturopathy is a system of man building in
harmony with constructive principles of Nature on physical, mental, moral and
spiritual planes of living. It has great health promotive, disease preventive
and curative as well as restorative potential. |

|
The main principles of Naturopathy are :
- All disease, their cause and their treatment
are one. Except for traumatic and environmental conditions, the cause of all
diseases is one i.e, accumulation of morbid matter in the body and their
elimination from the body is the treatment.
- The primary cause of disease is not bacteria
or virus. bacteria and virus enter and survive in the body only after the
accumulation of morbid matter when a favourable atmosphere for their growth
is established. Hence, the basic cause is morbid matter, not the bacteria.
They are secondary cause.
- Acute diseases are self healing effort of the
body. Hence they are our friends, not the enemy. Chronic diseases are
outcome of wrong treatment and suppression of the acute diseases.
- Nature is the greatest healer. Body has a
capacity to prevent itself form disease and regain health if fallen ill.
- In Naturopathy patient is treated and not the
disease.
- In Naturopathy diagnosis is easily possible.
Ostentation and long waits for diagnosis are not required for treatment.
- Patients suffering from chronic ailments are
also treated successfully in comparatively less time in naturopathy.
- Suppressed diseases can also be cured by
naturopathy.
- Nature Cure takes into consideration physical,
mental, social ( moral ) and spiritual aspects together in healing.
- Nature Cure treats body as a whole instead of
giving treatment to specific conditions.
- Naturopathy does not use medicines. Here
" Food is Medicine".
- According to Gandhi Ji, " Rama Nama
" is the best natural treatment, whereby he means that doing prayer
according to one's own faith should be an important part of the treatment.
The general treatment modalities employed in
nature Cure are Diet Therapy, Fasting Therapy, Mud Therapy, Hydro Therapy, Masso
Therapy, Cheromo Therapy and Air Therapy. To know the immediate condition of the
disease some diagnostic methods are used like the Iris Diagnosis and the Facial
Diagnosis.
Some important treatments of Naturopathy are Mud
Pack, Mud Bath, Hip Bath, Sitz Bath, Spinal Bath, Immersion Bath, Foot Bath,
Steam Bath, Sun Bath, Hot & Cold Fomentation, Wet Sheet pack, Chest Pack,
Abdomen Pack, Knee Pack, Enema etc..
Asthma ( allergic and bronchial ),
Amoebiasis, Anemia,
Anxiety Neurosis, Allergic Skin Diseases, Cervical Spondylosis, Chronic
Non-Healing Ulcers, Colitis, Cirrhosis of Liver, Constipation, Diarrhea,
Dysentery, Diabetes Mellitus, Eczema, Facial Paralysis, Flatulence, Gastritis,
Gout, Hemiplegia, Hypertension, Hypotension, Hyperacidity, Jaundice,
Leucorrhoea, Leprosy, Obesity, Osteo-Arthiritis, Poliomyelitis, Peptic Ulcer,
Psoriasis, Scabies, Sciatica, Splenomegaly, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psychosomatic

PHYSIOTHERAPY :: AN INTRODUCTION
Physical
therapy (or physiotherapy),
often abbreviated PT, is
a health care profession which aims the physical treatment and management of
disease or condition which enables people to reach their maximum potential. 'Physical
therapists' (or physiotherapists) are primary healthcare professionals who
diagnose and treat individuals of all ages, from newborns to the very oldest,
who have medical problems or other health-related conditions, illnesses, or
injuries that limit their abilities to move and perform functional activities as
well as they would like in their daily lives.
|

|
Physical therapists examine each
individual and develop a plan using treatment techniques to promote the ability
to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability. In addition, PTs
work with individuals to prevent the loss of mobility before it occurs by
developing fitness and wellness-oriented programs for healthier and more active
lifestyles, providing services to individuals and populations to develop,
maintain and restore maximum movement and functional ability throughout the
lifespan. This includes providing services in circumstances where movement and
function are threatened by aging, injury, disease or environmental factors.
Functional movement is central to what it means to be healthy.
|
Physical
therapy is concerned with identifying and maximizing quality of life and
movement potential within the spheres of promotion, prevention,
treatment/intervention, habilitation and rehabilitation. This encompasses
physical, psychological, emotional, and social well being. Physical therapy
involves the interaction between physical therapist, patients/clients, other
health professionals, families, care givers, and communities in a process where
movement potential is assessed and goals are agreed upon, using knowledge and
skills unique to physical therapists.

FROM
THE DIRECTOR'S DESK |
|
The present trend of modern
civilisation has hampered our natural life cycle.
Everything is now guided by the principles of
technology and comfort with little concern for
man's natural values. This change in basic
attitude has spoiled our life style and the state of health
is declining day by day. Also in all walks of life
artificial practice in food, shelter, relaxation
and thinking has made man a machine and his emotional
pattern is highly suppressed. This problem is
further compounded by deterioration in physical
condition due to loss of natural resistance and
immunity. Hence the ultimate result is an irreversible
chain of events leading to disease effects on
health. But the good part is that people have now
started realising the repercussion of such kind of
lifestyle. And now more and more people are trying
to make lifestyle corrections under the guidance
of professionals. Yog holds great promise as more
and more people look for holistic alternative
cures and remedies that are natural and are
relatively free from side-effects. Given that
there are very few trained professionals in this
field, the scope of this science is enormous and
the demand for yog professionals will keep
catapulting upwards.
